About Us

Cashel-Connemara Credit Union Ltd

Cashel-Connemara Credit Union was established in 1967, around the time that the Irish credit union movement was approaching its 10th anniversary. Our common bond covers an area which is defined as living within a 14 mile radius of Cashel, Connemara, Co. Galway. This constitutes a vast area of Connemara stretching from Carraroe on the south to Letterfrack on the North and takes in the Clifden, Roundstone, Recess, Cashel and Carna areas.

For over 20 years since it was set up, the Credit Union was run exclusively by volunteers.

In 1993 the first staff member was taken on board. In the eighties, a building was erected in Cashel, and the nineties saw the purchase of office premises in the Clifden area, which has recently been replaced by a new three story building. The staff level has increased as have the opening hours. We have office hours in Clifden six days per week as well as two days in Cashel and half a day in Carna. The Credit Union has grown to become a vital part and necessary service within the local community.

Tullycross Credit Union

A study group was formed in 1969 and Tullycross Credit Union was established in 1970 following this study.  The credit union had been run from the community hall by volunteers for 20 years until the office was built in the 1980s. The credit union employed its first staff member in 1995. The office was extended and renovated in 2008.

Connemara Credit Union Ltd

Cashel-Connemara and Tullycross Credit Unions, were two relatively small credit unions covering a vast common bond in the Connemara Area.

With the commencement of the increased regulatory regime for credit unions, it followed that both credit unions had extensive contact with each other with respect to training, risk and compliance and other aspects of credit union business.

In 2015 at respective Credit Union board levels it was decided that we should consider the possibility of merging both credit unions.

In May 2017, after much discussion and a lengthy engagement with the Financial Regulator, both Credit Unions came together and formed Connemara Credit Union Ltd.
